Rural school districts facing major issues with teacher hiring

Thumbnail Img 8884NEWELL, S.D.– All across the state and nation, especially in rural places like Newell, teacher shortages are a major issue. Administrators say gauging teachers’ interest in the area can be hard.

Housing is another issue, as some instructors drive in from as far as Spearfish for their classes.

The fact that the town’s school district currently has four openings they are looking to fill for the upcoming academic year, is weighing on administrative minds.

“We’re having jobs that have been open for months, and we don’t have any active applicants, applications are open right now,” Superintendent for Newll School District Andrew Fergen said. “And that’s a struggle for our school district and a struggle for a lot of the other districts within the state, but it’s hard when you don’t have anyone even applying for your positions.”
