Rounds asks DOJ to look into meatpacking industry antitrust violations
WASHINGTON — Senator Mike Rounds and 27 others Wednesday requested that the Department of Justice investigate the meatpacking industry.
The bipartisan letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland asks the DOJ to look into any potential antitrust violations.
The four largest meatpacking companies – two of which are foreign-owned – control over 80% of the meat processing market.
Rounds says the letter is the first step in restoring competition to the marketplace for cattlemen and keeping the prices affordable to the consumer.
He adds that if the DOJ does not act, Congress will need to examine reforms to the industry.
