Rodeo returns: Pro Rodeo Finale at Central States Fair

RAPID CITY, S.D. — An unexpected return to the rodeo spotlight for Rapid City as the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) comes back to town.

The Pro Rodeo Finale runs Tuesday through Saturday, Sept. 22-26, at the Central States Fairground.

Pro Rodeo Finale 7The event was originally scheduled in Puyallup, Washington, but needed to find a new home because of the high incidence of COVID-19 in that state.

Ron Jeffries, General Manager of the Central States Fair, says getting the event was an unexpected bonus that benefits both Rapid City and the Black Hills region.

“Well, you know, there’s many South Dakota rodeos that were televised this year, including Belle Fourche, Deadwood, and the Range Days Rodeo in Rapid City,” said Jeffries. “When you get television coverage like that, it goes across the nation and we get inquiries from all over the place, asking about our rodeos, asking about our places. Lots of people coming out here just to visit, and people find out they really like this place.”

The Pro Rodeo Finale is one of the last big events of the season, giving riders one last chance to get into the top fifteen and advance to the National Finals Rodeo to be held at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, in December.
