UPDATE: Police respond to shots fired, suspect dead

UPDATE (7:50) — Shortly after 5 p.m. Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office responded to calls of shots being fired at the 800 block of East Minnesota Street. Officers were fired upon from a suspect when they arrived at the scene. The suspect is believed to be shooting from the second floor.

Officers entered the apartment building and engaged the suspect, who died on the scene. A victim was also found on the second floor. While life-saving measures were taken, they have been pronounced dead. No officers were injured in the shooting.

Sheriff Kevin Thom and Asst. Police Chief Don Hedrick said that a large-scale investigation will be held to determine what happened.

The suspect has not been identified, but it is believed that he lived in the apartment building. The victim has been identified, but their identity will not be released until family has been notified.

RCPD and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call with Highway Patrol and Rapid City Fire Department’s emergency medical service.
