Rehearsal for ‘The Nutcracker’ holiday ballet
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Black Hills Dance Theater preforms ‘The Nutcracker’ every other year, bringing local children as young as six to the stage and hiring professional dancers for the larger roles.
Director Michele Wiles was a Sugarplum Fairy six years ago. Now that she is on the other side of the curtain she is happy to see lots of returning faces.
“Since 2013 there are a lot of the same people that I was able to meet and preform for, they are all back here for the 2019 production six years later. So yeah people stay involved.” Said Michele Wiles.
The Nutcracker production is a great way to get young kids involved in the community and allows them to express themselves.
One of the ballet dancers Finley Craven said “The best part is probably being able to play these characters and express our joy for dance on stage and to spread Christmas joy to the audience. Because Christmas is my favorite and dancing is both of our favorites.”
Another ballet dancer Avery Andreson said “It definitely helped me become more confident and it just helped me express myself more and its really fun too.”
The Nutcracker will be preformed at the Civic Center theater next Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and an afternoon show on Saturday at 2 p.m.
