Red Cross of South Dakota honors volunteers, first responders

A big ‘thank you’ to first responders and community volunteers Thursday from the Red Cross of South Dakota.

They hosted a banquet in Rapid City to honor outstanding citizens and their contributions to the city. First responders, community volunteers, and local organizations were also recognized.

“Whether that’s responding to Hurricane Florence, Hurricane Harvey, the house fires that take place across the nation on a day to day basis,” said Richard Smith, the executive director of the South Dakota Red Cross,” The Red Cross is there to help people recover from those disasters.”

Becky Eisenbraun received the Rookie of the Year Award for her contributions locally as a Disaster Action Team Captain. Kathy Deml received the ‘Living the Mission Award’ for her work with the Red Cross and assisting local families after house fires. Finally, Pennington County Sheriffs Deputy Amanda Swanson received the First Responder Award for saving a family during a blizzard earlier in 2018.

Last year, the Red Cross in South Dakota helped over 300 families affected by fires, floods, and tornadoes.
