Recent rise in drownings prompts safety message from first responders

A rise in recent area drownings has prompted a safety reminder from First Responders.

RAPID CITY, S.D. — As local agencies have responded to four drownings in the last month, local first responders are issuing a safety message.

Rapid City Fire Captain Keith Trojanowski says to always exercise caution while out on the water and to let a loved one know when you intend to head out.

“We do preach water safety and being safe in the environment, so if we have an option to wear a life vest, we always choose to wear a life vest,” Trojanowski said. “Let somebody know and be with a partner, you know, that’s working with you so you can always call 9-1-1 if you do get into an emergency.”

Captain Trojanowski adds to swim with a partner if possible — the old buddy system.
