Recent Rapid City power outages serve as a reminder to call 811 before you dig

Two incidents resulted in power outages for parts of Rapid City

UtilitiesRAPID CITY, S.D. – This week, there were two power outages in different parts of Rapid City affecting approximately 500 homes. Striking underground electrical wires caused the outages.

Whether you’re a home owner looking to start a new project, or a contractor, calling 811 is a necessary first step for any digging project.

811 is the national call before you dig hotline. Calling 811 will send utility locating companies out to mark where underground utility lines are.

Before starting to dig, schedule a locating appointment at least 48 hours ahead. Appointments can also be made online.

Locating companies use different colors to indicate a number of different utility lines. Green for sewer, blue for water, orange for communications, yellow for gas, and red for electric.

Amanda Haugen of West River Electric states that along with calling 811, “Before you start digging with mechanical excavation, you want to hand dig at least 18 inches on either side of the mark just to make sure.”

Utility markings aren’t exact, so hand digging can further prevent hitting utility lines.
