Ready to make a splash? Rapid City pools open next week and are in need of lifeguards

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Get ready to beat the summer heat as the Rapid City pools open for the season next week.

The 50-meter outdoor lap pool at the Roosevelt Swim Center will open Monday, Memorial Day. Parkview, Horace Mann and Jimmy Hilton (a.k.a Sioux Park) pools will open on Wednesday, June 1.

All of the pools will be open Monday through Saturday from noon 6 p.m. and Sundays from 1-6 p.m.

Unfortunately, the Rapid City Swim Center has had to reduce its hours due to a lack of lifeguards this year.

“We saw a huge downturn of lifeguards after COVID because of the fact that we were shut down in 2020. That forced a lot of our returning staff to go find other jobs that summer. And since then we’ve had a little hard time recovering,” said Barb Iwan, City Recreation Division aquatic specialist.

This is not a problem common just to Rapid City but throughout the Black Hills. Rapid City is currently hiring 10 lifeguards and swim lesson instructors.

“We are still seeing aquatic facilities in our geographic area struggle,” said Iwan, “There is a continuing need for lifeguards.  We are continuing to promote and push for more lifeguards. We also need instructors for swim lessons. Swim lessons are so important and we need instructors, not just for the summer but for the entire year.”

Special events this summer at the Rapid City pools will include “Splash and Dash” where patrons can swim for half price at $3 Mondays through Saturdays from 5-6 p.m. On Sundays, they offer “Funday 4 Sunday,” where families or groups of four will be admitted for $11.
