RCPD tracks robbery suspect through snow

RAPID CITY, S.D. — After responding to an armed robbery report from the Loaf N Jug convenience store on Mt. Rushmore Road, Rapid City Police officers arrested a suspect by tracking his footprints through the snow.

The call came in late Saturday night. An employee told responding officers that a man entered the store, brandished a shotgun, and demanded money. The employee complied.

Officers reviewed the store’s surveillance footage then tracked footprints to a residence on Clark Street. Security camera footage from a neighboring home showed the suspect entering the residence in question.

Because the suspect had been armed with a shotgun, officers called out the Special Response Team to serve a search warrant.

During the search, they found a shotgun and clothing worn by the suspect, who was identified as 22-year-old Clayton Otto of Rapid City.

Following an interview by RCPD’s Criminal Investigations Division, Otto was arrested for First Degree Robbery. He was taken to the Pennington County Jail.
