RCPD reminds motorist to drive safe over holiday weekend

RAPID CITY, S.D. — According to AAA more than 39 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend.

That’s up a little more than 8% compared to last year. Almost 90% of those traveling plan to drive to their destinations. You can bet that will translate into more traffic in our area as visitors come to take in the Mount Rushmore State for the unofficial start of summer.

With all those extra cars on the road the Rapid City Police are asking that you utilize safe driving practices this weekend. RCPD Community Relations Specialist Brendyn Medina says, “Pack your patients, slow down. Make sure that you’re wearing your seat belt and that you are practicing good safe driving behaviors.”

The RCPD also reminds people planning to use alcohol this weekend to secure a ride home. Also to keep an eye out for more pedestrians as we head into the warm season.
