RCPD investigating shooting near North Maple Avenue and Van Buren Street

UPDATE: According to a statement from RCPD Chief Don Hedrick, around 10:00 a.m. RCPD, Rapid City Fire Department and Pennington County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the intersection of North Maple Avenue and Van Buren Street in response to a report of a male in his 20’s being shot in the area.

That person has been transported to the hospital with serious, life threatening injuries.

Witnesses described a white Cadillac with paper license plates had left the area travelling south. RCPD officers spotted a Cadillac fitting that description at the intersection of East Boulevard and East Boulevard North and conducted a traffic stop, resulting in one man being detained. Chief Hedrick said that investigators believe the detained individual to be involved in the shooting.

Investigators believe drugs may be a factor in this incident, but didn’t give any further statement as the investigation is still ongoing.

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Police are investigating a shooting that took place at the intersection of North Maple Avenue and Van Buren Street, according to a tweet from the Rapid City Police Department.

One person has been transported to the hospital with serious, life threatening injuries. A portion of North Maple Avenue just south of the intersection is closed while authorities investigate the crime scene.

Police are asking the public to please avoid the area for the time being.
