Rapid City police identify victim of Saturday night homicide


UPDATE (06/08/20 9:30 a.m.): The Rapid City Police Department has identified the man who was killed in an apartment building Saturday night.

According to the RCPD,  Harry Blackbear, 48, of Rapid City was found unresponsive at The Palms Apartments and was pronounced dead on scene.

Lawrence Mexican, 29, of Rapid City was arrested early Sunday morning and taken into custody. Mexican is charged with 2nd-degree murder and is set to appear in Pennington County Court Monday at 10 a.m.

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Police Department has placed a man under arrest for Second Degree Murder following an assault at a local motel.

On June 6, around 10:00 a.m., the police were dispatched to The Palms Apartments, located at 710 Meade Street, for a report of an assault that had occurred.

When police arrived, they were directed to a room where the assault had taken place and located the victim of the assault. The victim was unresponsive, but police attempted emergency life-saving measures until an ambulance arrived. On arrival, medics pronounced the man dead.

The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time to give proper notification to next-of-kin.

The police spoke with multiple witnesses who identified the suspect as 29-year-old Lawrence Mexican of Rapid City.

Around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday June 7, Mexican was found sleeping in an area south of the Civic Center’s overflow parking lot. Police observed blood on Mexican’s shoes and socks.

Mexican was placed under arrest for Second Degree Murder before being transported to the Pennington County Jail.
