RCPD investigating after body found near Founder’s Park

Yellow police tape across a crime scene

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what they are calling an unattended death after a man’s body was discovered near Founder’s Park Thursday morning.

At around 7:30 a.m. on November 12th, police were dispatched to an area just west of Founder’s Park for a report of an unresponsive subject. On arrival, police located a male who was obviously deceased near the creek.

No preliminary signs of trauma or other foul play were observed by police, however the RCPD continues to investigate the unattended death with the assistance of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office. An autopsy has been scheduled in the investigation. The identity of the deceased is being withheld until proper notification of next-of-kin can take place.

“Any death in our community is a tragedy, including this one,” says Chief of Police Don Hedrick. “It is not safe for any member of our community to sleep outside during the winter months. Officers of the RCPD do their best to patrol the areas of our city where our most vulnerable population is known to frequent. Our goal is to make contact with individuals in order to get them to a safe and warm place for the evening through community partnerships and with assistance from the Pennington County Care Campus. The collective sympathies of the RCPD go out to the friends and family of this individual.”

Anyone who encounters someone who appears to be struggling to find a safe place to be for the evening should contact police at 605-394-4131 so the RCPD may assist them.
