RCPD installs cameras, monitoring in Memorial Park

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Police Department is in the process of installing cameras around Memorial Park.

Officials say that while the park is generally safe, the homeless population is often victimized and prone to assaults.

The cameras are intended to help police monitor what actually happens in the park, and provide the proper support.

“When we have people that do like to indulge in alcoholic beverages in the park system and we can maybe deter that with cameras,” said Brian Blenner, RCPD. “We can get some resources for those people that are intoxicated or maybe need help. If there’s an assault maybe we can review cameras and look at what happened.”

Six new cameras have so far been placed near the band shell and at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, with two more on the way, in hopes of covering the entire park.
