RCPD: Driver who hit car, electrical boxes had meth

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Police say a man they chased around town did some damage during a drug-related pursuit.
The suspect, 24-year-old Derek Atthestraight of Rapid City, was arrested Saturday night.
Police tried and failed to stop him after noticing his van’s license plate light was out. Even after hitting spike strips, the van kept going.
At one point, police say the van hit a parked vehicle near East New York Street and Cherry Avenue.
Next, they say he struck electrical boxes behind a home on the 700 block of East Chicago Street.
Atthestraight got out and ran, but police caught up and detained him at Taser-point, realizing he had a warrant out for his arrest.
Police say Atthestraight had jeweler’s bags containing methamphetamine on his person. They tested his pee, which came back positive for meth and THC.
Atthestraight’s charges: aggravated eluding, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, obstruction, possession of a controlled substance, ingestion of a controlled substance, ingestion of a substance other than alcohol to intoxicate, improperly lighted license plate.
