RCPD and RCAS remind drivers to be safe in school zones
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Area Schools and the police are reminding drivers and pedestrians to be safe in school zones and near the yellow buses.
They urge drivers to stop when approaching school buses with flashing red lights.
Not only is it state law to come to a complete stop, but the lights mean children are either getting on or off the bus and drivers must stop regardless of their direction of travel.
Additionally, the schools and police are asking parents to teach their children the importance of obeying the crosswalks.
“We want them to be good pedestrians and utilize crosswalks whenever possible,” said RCPD Community Relations Specialist, Brendyn Medina. “Always look both ways before you cross the street, and it’s vitally important that parents take that time to have that discussion with their kids if they’re having their kids walk to school.”
RCPD will continue to address traffic and crosswalk violations with regular patrols through school zones.
