RCFD responds to structure fire at Material Recovery Facility

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the Rapid City Fire Department responded to the Material Recovery Facility on South Highway 79 for a report of a fire alarm.

When Engine 4 arrived on scene, they noticed that smoke was filling a large commercial building, and upgraded the call to a full structure fire response.

Additional crews arrived to help contain the fire, which was located on one of the conveyor belts inside the building. Once crews went through all the garbage on the conveyor belts to ensure the fire was out, they ventilated the building to clear the smoke that had built up.

Engine 4, Engine 6, Battalion 1, Squad 1, Truck 1, Medic 1, and MDU all responded to the incident.

The Rapid City Fire Department would like to remind everyone that the area will be in a high wind advisory starting Wednesday night and going through the next few days. Citizens are asked to be aware of these conditions as fire danger is at an extreme high.
