RCFD is encouraging the public not to use oil fryers to cook their turkeys this Thanksgiving

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Thanksgiving is just around the corner and so is the need for food preparation.

The Rapid City Fire Department is encouraging residents to not cook turkeys in oil fryers. Common mistakes such as putting too much oil in the pot or having the temperature up too high can lead to fires.

Turkey fryers filled with oil often overflow when the bird is placed inside which leads to an instant fire. Oil fryers are often unstable and can be tipped over easily which can cause a fast-spreading fire and injuries.

Division Chief, Brian Povandra said, “A lot of times we see a lot of unattended cooking fires. Making sure that if you’re leaving, maybe you forgot something at the store. If you are gonna leave for a period of time shutting off your stove, shutting off your oven, not having those things, your appliances like that going while you are gone is a good thing.”

Cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the United States.
