RCFD holds “pack test” at Dunham Field to maintain physical readiness
RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Fire Department held pack testing all week at Dunham Field.
Crew members must walk three miles in 45 minutes with a 45-pound pack – hence the name “pack test.”
Firefighters say that the challenge is a great way to build team camaraderie and that their competitive approach keeps them working together, which rolls over into their work of serving the community.
“We also are very competitive, so we push each other and we strive to do better on everything we do, which translates into going on calls and we try to be the best we can for the public and community,” said Matt Curley, paramedic and journeyman for the Rapid City Fire Department.
The firefighters must pass the pack test as well as multiple other physical fitness requirement tests every year.
