RCAS staff could be required to wear masks this Fall

RAPID CITY, S.D. — As Rapid City Area Schools work to reopen this fall, administrators say they are recommending that all staff wear masks.

The recommendation will be sent to the school board next month for a final decision.

If passed, each staff member will receive two masks and a face shield from the district.

“Everyone has to recognize that it’s going to be a fluid plan. Things can change at any moment we’re just going to have to be flexible. But we are going to put forward our best thinking and planning,” says district Communications Manager, Katy Urban.

As of now there is no guidance on whether students will also be required to wear masks..

As for in-person learning the district is still leaning toward a hybrid model, letting parents decide whether students will go in or work from home.

Other safety protocols up for review are downsizing classroom occupancy and socially distanced seating.
