RCAS postpones decision on select books

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A final decision on whether the Rapid City Area Schools should destroy or sell books will have to wait.

After lengthy discussion on Tuesday, the board voted to have the district’s legal experts look at the issue before taking a final vote. The books are considered surplus property, but some people have various issues with their content.

The books include “How Beautiful We Were,” a novel written by Imbolo Mbue.

The publisher, Penguin Random House, says it’s a story about a “Fearless young woman from a small African village who starts a revolution against an American oil company.”

Other titles include “Fun Home” by Alsion Bechdel, “Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky, the novel “Girl, Woman, Other” by Bernadine Evaristo, and “The Circle” by Dave Eggers.
