RCAS officially opens its new administrative building

RAPID CITY, S.D. -The Rapid City Area School district has moved into its new administrative offices downtown. The employees hard at work in their new desks as they prepare for the next school year.

The new RCAS home is the old Black Hills Corps. building at Kansas City and 9th Streets.

The planning and renovations have been going on for more than a year.

Most of the space will be dedicated to RCAS administration and two floors will be affiliated with the YMCA.

“Every single department plays a major role so having them all under one roof is just an awesome thing. It’s good to have the team in one building and you come up with the creative process,” said Kumar Veluswamy, the facilities manager.

The entire building will house 71 school district employees and over a dozen departments.

The renovations weren’t as extensive as originally planned.

In fact the price tag came in at $4.2 million, $3 million less than the original estimate.

Reusing furniture and only updating what was necessary helped keep costs down.

Although the building has been around for decades it looks brand new inside.

“I just have to say thank you for my team, the architects and contractors that worked on this project, everybody put a lot a lot of time in this and heart and soul and dedication. Without them we would not have been able to pull this through,” said Veluswamy.

The YMCA’s childcare center will move in at the end of August.
