RCAS board approves election results, interim position hires

The RCAS Board of Education approved the June election results, as well as two new hires to top positions in the district.

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Area School District met in a special session on Tuesday, canvassing the latest school board election results and approving two new hires to top positions in the district.

The board unanimously approved the results from the election.

In Area 3, Michael Birkeland defeated incumbent Gabe Doney, receiving 57 percent of the votes, while Jamie Clapham defeated Janyce Hockenbary, receiving 60 percent of the votes in Area 6.

RCAS officials say that the complexity lies in the fact that the district’s representation areas for its board members don’t exactly match up with precinct areas.

This means that you could have voters fall inside of that precinct that aren’t allowed or don’t quality for that particular election.

“Because this was a combined election and had several other races, the overall votes do not necessarily always match up to what the actual board race outcome was,” Director of Business and Support Services for RCAS Coy Sasse said.

RCAS also unanimously approved the hiring of Nicole Swigart and Michael Talley as the Interim CEO and Interim Assistant Superintendent.

This will be Swigart’s 34th year with the district and Talley’s 15th, all of which were served as principal of Rapid City Central High School.
