RC Stevens girls soccer loses state championship in PKs

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Since girls soccer became a sanctioned sport by the South Dakota High School Activities Association back in 2012, Rapid City Stevens has never one a state title.

The Raiders came so close on Saturday but lost to Sioux Falls Roosevelt in the Class AA championship match, 2-1.

The contest was tied at one a piece after regulation.

So it came down to penalty kicks.

The Raiders had two chances to win on PKs.

But unfortunately, the Rough Riders ended up beating the Raiders 4 to 3 on penalty kicks to capture their first ever girls state soccer title.

Shea Ellender scored on a free kick for the Raiders in the 19th minute.

Stevens has now finished runner-up for the second time in four years.

The Raiders lost to Pierre in the state finals in 2018.

The Stevens girls soccer team finishes the season with a record of 12-3-1.
