RC Stevens enters girls basketball season with new coach

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Stevens girls basketball team will tip off a new season on Friday with a new head coach.

Adam Dannenbring, who’s been coaching for 24 years, is taking over the Raiders program.

Dannenbring might be the new girls basketball coach, but he’s no stranger to the Raiders.

Last year, he was an assistant coach for the Stevens boys basketball team.

Dannenbring inherits a team that finished 17-6 last season and lost to Sioux Falls Washington in the championship game at the State ‘AA’ tournament.

The new coach doesn’t plan on making a lot of changes.

“Our girls have been very successful,” said Adam Dannenbring. “So it’s been more of learning curve for me. Just learn some of the concepts that they had on the girls side. Then I’m just trying to add in things that I know work well from my past experience.”

“I am so excited to have coach Dannenbring on staff,” said Stevens senior Bailee Sobczak. “I think he’s been an amazing fit for us so far and I’m super excited to come back to be able to be coached by such an amazing and wise coach. He’s brought his own twist on a couple of things and I’ve been blown away. Like wow this is really really cool. He’s just so smart with the game of basketball.”

Stevens lost four seniors to graduation.

But the Raiders return three starters from last year’s team; Jaden Matkins, Bailee Sobczak and Jayda McNabb.

Sobczak will miss the first month of the season as she continues to recover from a knee injury.

Meanwhile, McNabb was the second leading scorer on the team last year with 12 points and six rebounds per game.

Other players expecting to see valuable minutes are Taaliyah Porter and Jill Delzer.

“We have some younger girls that are looking to contribute,” said Dannenbring. “Macey Wathen and Brittany Jones and Izze Higgins. They could all contribute to the team this year for sure.”

Stevens opens the season on Friday, Dec. 10 in Pierre.

Then the Raiders will visit Aberdeen Central on Saturday.

The Raiders’ home opener is Saturday, Dec. 18 against Rapid City Central.
