RC Stevens boys basketball team returns a solid core of players

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The high school basketball off-season has been one of change for several area teams.

A few teams are starting over with young, incoming talent, while others are loaded with experience such as the Rapid City Stevens boys basketball squad.

The Stevens Raiders return a core group of experienced players after losing only three seniors to graduation.

In fact, the raiders have three starters back this year including Jaden Haefs, Ben Goldy and Charles Christensen.

Overall, coach Chris Stoebner expects to have a deep line-up after adding a couple of key transfers during the off-season.

“We added to the mix this year Kolin Ray, a transfer from Douglas,” said Chris Stoebner. “He’s going to give us some quality minutes. Nate Kindred transferred in. He’s 6’4”. Can kind of play the four, five or three spot. So he’s really going to help us athletic and long. Then we’ve got some other guys that played a few minutes last year or some key minutes last year. We have Hayden Gebhart, Lincoln Archambault. Those guys are both juniors. They’re going to play some major minutes for us. Matthew Weber, a senior, and Cade Sobczak are also going to get some minutes.”

Last year was an up and down season for Stevens.

The Raiders finished with a 9-10 record and lost to Brandon Valley in the SoDak 16.

But coach Stoebner is feeling optimistic about this year and feels his team has a good chance making it back to the state tournament.

“I think we can put four of five guys on the court sometimes that can shoot the three,” said Stoebner. “All can put it on the floor. Those types of things. Hopefully we can be tough to defend. The biggest thing I think is the guys. We were pretty inexperienced last year and they know what we want to do especially on the defensive end this year. They’ve been working on that all summer. So I think we’re ahead of where we’re really usually are in terms of defense, individually and team defense.”

The Stevens Raiders open the season with three home games.

The Raiders will host Pierre and Aberdeen Central on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10-11.

Then on Tuesday, Dec. 14, Stevens will entertain the Rapid City Central Cobblers.
