RC pool closing dates announced, attendance down from 2021
The last day for swimming at the Horace Mann and Parkview pools is Saturday, Aug. 20. The last day for the Jimmy Hilton pool at Sioux Park is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 3, depending on staff availability.
Additionally, the Jimmy Hilton pool will host the annual Wags & Waves dog swim on Sunday, Sept. 4, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm.
Registration can be done here and will require a $5 donation to the humane society.
The Roosevelt Swim Center’s indoor facility will close at the end of pool hours Aug. 20 for its annual maintenance and will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 6 with all group exercise classes resuming on that day.
“We will lose most of our lifeguards and other seasonal staff in a few weeks,” said Aquatics Program Specialist Barb Iwan. “We have to make adjustments and we work very hard to keep one of the outdoor pools and the Swim Center’s outdoor 50-meter pool open to Labor Day weekend.”
The pools have reported more than 60,000 swimmers in June and July this year, down six percent from the record 64,000 swimmers during the same two-month period in 2021.
The Swim Center reported an increase in attendance with 23,476 in 2022 from 22,600 in 2021.
Horace Mann, Jimmy Hilton and Parkview pools all reported a decrease in numbers:
- Horace Mann: 2022 – 11,781; 2021 – 13,702
- Jimmy Hilton: 2022 – 13,883; 2021 – 16,208
- Parkview: 2022 – 11,161; 2021 – 11,586
“We’ve had some hot days this summer but not as many as last summer,” said Iwan. “And last summer, we opened to record numbers since the pools had been closed the previous year due to COVID. Despite the slight decrease, it’s been a busy summer at our pools.”
There may have been a decline in the numbers from last year, they are still above what the pools were seeing before the pandemic.
