RC Central boys basketball team returns three starters

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Central boys basketball team is busy gearing up for its season opener on Saturday, Dec. 12.

The Cobblers finished 10-10 last year.

But they upset Sioux Falls Lincoln in the SoDak 16 and qualified for the state tournament.

Unfortunately, the state tournament was cancelled due to Covid-19.

The Cobblers lost eight seniors to graduation.

But they return three starters, Kohl Meisman, Julian Swallow and Micah Swallow.

“Both Kohl and Micah started a little bit their senior year,” Central boys basketball coach TJ Hay said. “Excuse me their sophomore year. Julian Swallow started last year. So we have three returners who have a lot of experience. They were our three leading scorers last year. But we lost a little size, 6’6″, 6’5″. We have a couple of seniors that played strictly JV last year that are going to have to step up.”

Along with the three returning starters, the Cobblers also have several other players ready to step up and help fill those shoes including Josh Krauter, Blaine Isler and Liam Porter.

Overall, coach Hay says his team will have to improve defensively in order to be successful this year.

“In the past, we kind of just relied on our athleticism,” Hay said. “For these guys, I know they can score p

oints. Their transition can get up and down and obviously last year, that was our best offense. But I think when these guys really decide to bare down and defend like they can, they can be a pretty good team.”

The Central boys will start the season with its first three games on the road starting on Saturday, Dec. 12 at Douglas High School in Box Elder.

The Cobblers home opener is Dec. 22 against Sturgis.
