Rapid City’s new estimated population for 2019 approved

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City’s Legal and Finance Committee approved the city’s estimated population for 2019.

The city calculates the population based on building data and other reports taken during the year. Community Development Director Ken Young puts the estimated population at 77,185. This is an increase of .85% over last year. Those number could change a little after the 2020 census.

“Then we will do some corrections to those numbers as we go along and we’ll also use our information to challenge the census if there’s anything we see out of line.” said Ken Young.

The city’s estimate is used in various ways, from applying for federal grants, to evaluating housing needs.

Young says the building data shows continued future growth with no expected slow down amid COVID-19 concerns.
