Rapid City woman sentenced to 15 years for fatal Box Elder accident
RAPID CITY, S.D. — A Rapid City woman has been sentenced to 15-years in prison for a fatal motorcycle crash.
Sophia Elbow Shield’s blood alcohol level was more than triple the legal limit when she crashed a trike last July in Box Elder. Her passenger, 62-year-old Brian Minor, was killed in the accident.
Prosecutors say she had also used meth.
Elbow Shield was seriously injured and transported to the hospital after the accident, which happened when she tried to turn onto I-90 from Liberty Boulevard and lost control. They went into a ditch and collided with a barbed wire fence. Neither was wearing a helmet.
Minor was pronounced dead at the scene.
Judge Robert Gusinsky suspended seven years of Elbow Shield’s sentence, so she’ll be in prison for eight years and probation for seven.
