The closure comes as a response to high amounts of illegal dumping of large items such as furniture and appliances. City officials are currently scoping out locations to replace the closed site.

“Overall, the big issue moving forward is that we’d like to find one central location that we can move forward in the years ahead,” Communications Coordinator for the City of Rapid City, Darrell Shoemaker said. “Where we can do the yard waste, the recycling and everything all rolled into one. So we’ll continue to look at that as well.”

Shoemaker explained the site must be large enough to house the waste containers and allow for traffic to flow in and out of the area.
