Rapid City to host 2019 PRCA bronc riding tourney
Organizers say tournament will be the biggest rodeo event in Rapid City history.
RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and the Central States Fair Committee made a big announcement Wednesday morning. One that will bring big bucks and bucking broncos to Rapid City this summer.
For the first time ever, PRCA chose Rapid City to host the 2019 PRCA Xtreme Broncs Finals during the Central States Fair.
Central States Fair General Manager Ron Jeffries made the announcement during Broncs for Breakfast at the Fair’s Kjerstad Event Center.
Jeffries also announced Wednesday morning an additional $50,000 in the prize purse. Organizers expect the larger purse to attract bigger names and more fans. Professional bronc riders believe it will be the biggest rodeo event in Rapid City’s history.
“The best guys in the world are going to be here,” said Jade Blackwell, a five-time Badlands Circuit finalist. “They’re going to be hungry for the money, so they’re going to have great horses, and it’s going to be an outstanding bronc match. So, a guy won’t want to miss it.”
For many bronc riders, it is only appropriate that the Xtreme Broncs Finals come to the Black Hills. The region is home to some of the sport’s finest riders and most enthusiastic fans.
“It’s where bronc riding started pretty much,” said Cort Scheer, number six in the world standings. “It goes back to Casey Tibbs and Chad Ferley and all the legends that live up here. And whenever you ride in the middle of South Dakota, the fans know a good bronc ride and a bad bronc ride, so it’s always a blast. If you get them excited, you’re doing something.”
The 2019 edition of the Xtreme Broncs Tour begins Wednesday evening at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
It will return to Rapid City for the finals on Thursday, Aug. 22.
