Rapid City teenager identified as victim in weekend fatal crash

NEW UNDERWOOD, S.D. — The South Dakota Department of Public Safety has identified the victim in Saturday’s fatal crash east of New Underwood.

15-year-old Olivia Newman of Rapid City was ejected from the vehicle after it left the roadway and rolled. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, 18-year-old Kayden Chalmers, and an unnamed 15-year-old passenger were thrown from the vehicle and sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries. Both are from Rapid City.

Charges are pending against Chalmers.

NEW UNDERWOOD, S.D. — A one-vehicle crash around 8:36 p.m. Saturday claimed the life of a 15-year-old and injured two other teenagers.

Preliminary information released by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety says that a 2004 Mercury Sable was eastbound on Interstate 90 about six miles east of New Underwood when it traveled off the roadway and rolled.

None of the three occupants were wearing seat belts; all three were thrown from the vehicle.

A 15-year-old female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The 18-year-old male drive and another 15-year-old female passenger sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.

DPS says charges are pending against the driver.

The names of those involved have not been released pending notification of next-of-kin.
