Rapid City Stevens girls basketball team gearing up for state tournament
RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Stevens Raiders are no strangers when it comes to the state girls basketball tournament.
As a matter of fact, the Raiders are gearing up to make their seventh straight appearance in the State ‘AA’ Tournament coming up March 19-21 in Sioux Falls.
Rapid City Stevens enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed with a 20-1 record.
The Raiders only loss this year was to top-seed Sioux Falls O‘Gorman.
The Raiders will open the tournament against No. 7 Brandon Valley who’s 12-9.
Stevens opened the season back on December 13 against Brandon Valley and the Raiders defeated the Lynx, 44-31.
But Stevens head coach Travis Swartz said both teams have changed a lot since their first meeting three months ago.
“They bring a good challenge to us because they like to play pressure defense,” Stevens girls basketball coach Travis Swartz said. “We’ve been playing teams recently that want to zone us. So a change of pace at least in the half court what we’ll see defensively. They’re long and they’re really well coached and a really good team too. They’ve really started to get things figured out towards the end of the season. We’re looking forward to that first game.”
“I think the big keys is just like playing together and not looking over anyone or any team in the state and just playing our hardest and working together as a team,” Stevens senior guard Grace Martin said. “Not being selfish. We’ve done a really good job this year of doing that. So I think we just have to continue what we’ve been doing.”
