Rapid City Stevens track coach wins national award

ALTOONA, IA – The National High School Athletic Coaches Association hosted its annual convention this week and announced its Coach of the Year winners.

Three coaches from South Dakota were honored at the event including Paul Hendry from Rapid City.

Hendry was named the Coach of the Year in girls track and field.

He just wrapped up his 25th year of coaching track and field at Rapid City Stevens High School, 22 years as the head coach.

Hendry led the Raiders to 16 state championships.

Also during that time, the Raiders won 64 individual events and 39 relay events at the state track meet.

David Dolan

Meanwhile, David Dolan from Rapid City was inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

He also received the Dwight T. Keith award which is the highest national award that the NHSACA bestows on an individual.

Dolan taught in Rapid City for 34 years and was a basketball official from 1980 to 2015.

Plus, he also coached football, basketball and track and field.
