Rapid City Steven hosts ceremony to honor state champion cross country team

RAPID CITY, S.D. –    The fall athletic teams at Rapid City Stevens have found great success this year.

The Stevens girls tennis team captured its first state title since 2006.

Plus, the Stevens girls finished runner – up at the State ‘AA’ soccer tournament.

Another ceremony was held at Heier Gymnasium on Monday to honor the Stevens cross country teams.

The Raider boys captured the state cross country title for the first time since 2004.

Meanwhile, the Stevens girls finished third at state.

So with that, Stevens won the combined cross country title in Class ‘AA’.

In addition to winning a state title, Stevens junior Simeon Birnbaum captured the individual state title.

A banner was also unveiled recognizing the team’s latest cross country state title.

“They’ve spent so much time running together since really last fall with this group,” said Stevens cross country coach Jesse Coy. “They worked so hard together putting in so much time. So hard work doesn’t always pay off in a win. But for these guys, it’s fun to see the outcome be a win for these guys.”

“So it was just a matter of coming together in the early season races,” said Stevens junior Simeon Birnbaum. “Getting in the grove and really not being comfortable. Never being comfortable with where your at in the state and always trying to push. See how good you can get. I believe we did a really great job at that and it just all came together at state.”
