Rapid City Sliders prepare for a trip to the Babe Ruth World Series

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A baseball team from Rapid City is out to prove that they can swing the bats as well as teams from across the United States.

The Rapid City Sliders are gearing up to compete in 2022 Babe Ruth 15U World Series in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

The team qualified for the Babe Ruth World Series after recently winning the Midwest Plains Regional Tournament in Rapid City.

The Sliders rallied from two runs down to beat Albany, Minnesota in the championship game by a score of 3-2.

The Sliders used a combination of timely hitting and solid pitching to win the region title.

But the team knows it will take more than that, if they hope to make a run at a World Series title.

“Throw strikes, have fun and play defense,” said Sliders third baseman Ian Beer. “Our hitting is normally always really good. So defense is what we need to focus on.”

“Like Ian said, we just need to focus on our defense,” said Slider first baseman Nolan Williamson. “Our hitting is just solid. We need to stay in it through the whole game.”

The Sliders have prior experience of playing in the Babe Ruth World Series.

Last year, nine out of the 11 players were on the Rapid City Braves team that qualified for the Babe Ruth 14U World Series in Iowa.

They hope that having that experience will help them as they compete again on a national stage.

“Having World Series experience already is great,” said Sliders coach Bryan Olmsted. “We know what to expect heading back into it again. The boys seem a lot more focused, a lot more prepared this year than they did last year. They’re beginning to trust one another. They trust the guy next to them and they play for the guy next to them. So it’s really nice to see them jell like this late in the season.”

“There’s a lot of good teams that are coming because it’s like the top eight in the nation,” said Sliders second baseman Will Waddell. “So we have to work hard to do good in it.”

The Rapid City Sliders open pool play on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 11 a.m. against Sandy, Oregon.
