Rapid City residents recycle Christmas lights, holiday greenery by the ton

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City residents heeded the City’s request and have recycled their holiday greenery and non-working lights in a major way.

The City says it received 32-hundred pounds – more than one ton – of non-working lights during December and January – that’s up 11-hundred pounds from a year ago.

Also, 36 tons – that’s 72-thousand pounds – of Christmas trees, wreaths, and other holiday greenery were collected from the City’s two remote collection sites.

Jancie Knight with the Solid Waste Division says a yard waste grinder breaks down the trees and other items to be used as compost by locals.
