Rapid City recycles more than 28 tons of holiday greenery, down from 2020
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Overall holiday greenery recycling totals from the 2021 season are down from 2020, and Rapid City officials say supply chain and inventory issues are likely to blame.
Rapid City residents recycled a total of 28.79 tons of Christmas trees, wreaths, and other greenery for this past season. That total is down from 36 tons in 2020.
“It was down from the year before, and the supply issues probably had a lot to do with it,” said City Solid Waste Outreach Coordinator Ria Harper. “That being said, there was still quite a bit of volume collected from the remote sites this season.”
The City collects that recycling at two separate remote waste locations on West Boulevard North and at Fitzgerald Stadium, as well as the landfill. Grinder machines will break down that greenery for the general public to use as compost.
