Rapid City priest sentenced for sexual contact with a minor
Father John Praveen was convicted of contact with a 13-year-old girl in September of 2018
RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Catholic Priest in the Rapid City Diocese has been sentenced to 6 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after 3 years.
John Praveen, 38, of Rapid City was sentenced for having sexual contact with a 13-year-old girl in September of 2018
State’s Attorney Mark Vargo requested for a 1 year sentence, while the defense led by John Murphy requested 180 days.
Judge Robert Mandel stated that “(he) did not believe that the penalty that was contemplated in the plea agreement is sufficient given the crime.”
The Diocese of Rapid City has taken away Praveen’s ability to give communion or wear the cloth, but is still a priest.
The family of the victim was present and a letter written by the mother was read aloud in court, detailing the irreparable damage that had been done to the victim and the family by Praveen’s actions.
