Rapid City Priest accused of sexual abuse bond reduced

John PraveenRAPID CITY, S.D. – Bond has been set for the Rapid City Catholic Priest charged with sexually abusing a 13-year-old child.

Judge Robert Mandel ruled on Wednesday at the Pennington County Courthouse that 38-year old Father John Praveen‘s bond is set at $10,000 cash. He will also be on electronic monitoring and will only be able to travel from his place of temporary residence to his attorney and his doctor’s office. Praveen reportedly suffers from a type of Thyroid disease and is being treated with medication.

If the money is raised for his bond, Father Praveen will be released into the custody of Brad and Mary Blauvelt. Blauvelt is a pastoral council member of Our Lady of the Black Hills in Piedmont. Blauvelt says that he does not have any direct relationship to Father Praveen. He says that when his diocese was discussing where Praveen could be house, if released, he said he immediately offered up his home. When NewsCenter 1 asked him why he would volunteer his home to someone he did not know, Blauvelt responded by saying “hate the sin, but love the sinner.”

A status hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 22nd at 9 a.m.
