Rapid City police stock up on new radios ahead of new state requirements

RAPID CITY, SD — The city’s Legal and Finance Committee has approved a grant for RCPD and the sheriff’s office to purchase car and personal radios.

The state is making changes to its communications system in 2023.

City leaders will stock-up on radios every year through grants to cut down on cost.

“Radios for us are our lifeline and we need to make sure we have equipment that’s properly working and that its the right radio,” said Asst. Chief Don Hedrick, “For us, planning ahead, it’s what we need to do to make sure we have the equipment we need.”

RCPD says the new radios will work on its current system and the new system as well.
