Rapid City police investigate New Year’s Day shooting death

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Hours after the new year began, Rapid City police began investigating the shooting death of a woman. The circumstances surrounding her death remain in question.

At about 3:45 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a hotel room at 1740 Rapp Street in north Rapid City. Inside, police found a woman with a single gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released. Police also say drugs and alcohol were found in the hotel room.

After speaking with people who were on scene, the Criminal Investigations Division is still working to determine who fired the gun, which would determine whether the incident should be classified as a homicide.

RCPD spokesman Brendyn Medina says, “They have a lot of forensic work ahead of them.” Test results could take at least two months, if not longer.

No arrests have been made nor suspects identified but police say there is no on-going threat to the public.
