Rapid City Police Department released its annual crime statistics for 2020

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Fewer calls and arrests but an increase in crime in Rapid City over the year 2020.

The Rapid City Police releasing its annual crime stats. RCPD responded to more 122,000 calls, that’s down 14% from 2019.

Homicides and robberies both went up with homicides doubling and robberies up 48%.

Motor vehicle thefts, burglary, and aggravated assaults are also up, arrests however dropped by 26%.

Captain Scott Sitts, Rapid City Police Department said, “You have crimes of opportunity, I think people are together more, and again with our homicides they were drug related. Drugs were a common theme throughout, in addition to the suspects being known to the victims and the victims being known to the suspects.”

The Rapid City Police will assess the numbers using them to prioritize department resources to adjust to the public’s needs.
