Rapid City official honored with Chet Stewart Award

RAPID CITY, S.D. – John Helsdon from Rapid City recently won the 2020 Chet Stewart Award for his many years of officiating hockey and for his contribution to officiating education programs.

Helsdon starting officiating hockey back in 1974 while growing up in New York state.

After moving to South Dakota, he started the Youth Mentoring Program in 2012.

Throughout his career, Helsdon has trained around 70 officials in New York and South Dakota.

Plus, he was the Director of Off-Ice Officials for the Rapid City Rush.

USA Hockey presented Helsdon with the award for his years of hard work and dedication.

“I just felt extremely honored to have been given the award this year,” John Helsdon said. “Just very honored and grateful for the recognition. Not so much for myself, but for the fact that a program promoting youth officiating was getting national recognition.”
