Rapid City man killed after chase, shooting identified

The high-speed chase ended in New Underwood Friday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigations has identified a man who died in an officer-involved shooting in New Underwood, following a vehicle pursuit Friday afternoon.

Matthew John Lorenzen, 19, of Rapid City was pronounced dead at the scene after an escalating incident resulted in a Pennington County deputy firing at Lorenzen.

After an attempted traffic stop in Rapid Valley, Lorenzen fled from a Pennington County Sheriff’s deputy and led authorities through parts of Box Elder and Rapid City. Lorenzen reportedly fired shots at deputies during the pursuit.

The pursuit ended in a rollover accident near Exit 78 off Interstate 90.

The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation says a summary regarding the incident will be released within 30 days.
