Suspect allegedly threatened clerk, took items from the store

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City man is in custody after allegedly threatening a clerk and robbing a store in the 1600 block of Mt. Rushmore Rd.

Rapid City Police were dispatched to the business Friday around 2:40 a.m. after the suspect had taken items from the store, left and was last seen heading north of Mt. Rushmore Rd.

Police were able to identify the suspect near the intersection of Mt. Rushmore Rd. and Clark St. where he was found carrying one of the stolen items.

According to police, Steven Ray Long, 54, of Rapid City was initially “non-compliant” after refusing to drop the item and place his hands behind his back. After a second officer arrived roughly a minute later, Long was safely taken into custody.

The clerk from the story was able to identify Long as the suspect and he was taken into custody.

Long is charged with 2nd Degree Robbery and also held for a Warrant. He was later booked into the Pennington County Jail and is set to appear in court Friday morning.
