Rapid City man enters plea in infant death case

RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City man pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning to second-degree murder for allegedly causing the death of an infant in early March.

James Cunningham, 26, a senior airman assigned to Ellsworth AFB was indicted last month and charged with second-degree murder. He appeared via video feed from the Pennington County Jail Tuesday morning.

Cunningham was previously charged with aggravated child abuse before the baby died nine days later.

On March 3, the Rapid City Police Department was dispatched to a home for a report of an unresponsive infant. The baby was taken to the hospital before being flown to Sioux Falls for treatment.

Cunningham is set to appear in court again on June 1. He remains in the Pennington County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
