Rapid City man drowns in Belle Fourche Reservoir

BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. — On Friday, July 10,  the Butte County Dispatch Center received a call at about 6:06 p.m., concerning a male individual in the water of the Belle Fourche Reservoir.

When law enforcement arrived, several individuals were performing CPR on an unresponsive 33-year-old male, who later was identified as Joshua Weisz of Rapid City.

Preliminary information indicated that a male and female were on a jet ski about 100 to 200 yards away from shore. Both fell off the jet ski. The female was able to hold on to the jet ski while the male wasn’t.

Several people witnessed what happened and tried to get to the male. When they arrived at the location, they saw that the male had gone underwater and was pulled to the surface.

The male was then transported to the Spearfish Regional Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The incident is currently being investigated by the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks as a water accident.
